Advancing Medical Ideas from Concept to Clinical Application

University of Utah James LeVoy Sorenson Center for Medical Innovation

Completed: 2026

Built to advance medical innovation from early concepts through clinical application, this facility brings health, engineering, business, and commercialization expertise together at the University of Utah. Researchers, clinicians, engineers, entrepreneurs, and industry partners have access to specialized environments for developing, prototyping, testing, and refining new medical technologies.

Prototyping and machine shop facilities provide tools for designing, modifying, and assembling medical devices, while 3D printing capabilities support rapid iteration and additive manufacturing. Startup incubators give emerging medtech companies access to shared resources and connections across the university and broader life sciences community.

Specialized environments extend the development process into testing and training. The ASCENT Surgical Lab reflects modern operating room conditions and supports hands-on training, procedural testing, device evaluation, and collaboration with clinicians and other end users. A controlled cleanroom manufacturing lab supports device assembly and verification, while flexible conference and training spaces accommodate demonstrations, educational programs, and professional gatherings.

Workspaces and collaboration areas connect these technical environments throughout the building, encouraging interaction across disciplines. Located on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, the facility brings the people, equipment, and specialized spaces involved in medical device development together under one roof.
