Healthcare Design with People in Mind

Intermountain Alta View Hospital Campus

Completed: 2019

Transforming a community hospital into a modern healthcare campus, Alta View Hospital’s redevelopment enhances care, expands services, and creates a welcoming new identity for patients and families. The reconfiguration combined new construction, selective renovation, and strategic demolition to maintain operations throughout the project. A new five-story patient tower, four-story clinic, central utility plant, and rooftop Life Flight helipad expand capacity while improving visibility and access for the growing southeast Salt Lake Valley community.

Set on a steeply sloping, high-seismic site, the project introduced innovative structural and architectural solutions to meet the demands of safety, efficiency, and patient comfort. SidePlate steel connections — a first for a critical healthcare facility in such a seismic zone — enabled faster, safer construction. Cantilevered building forms provide both additional hospital and clinic space and covered patient drop-off areas, while the Galleria concourse, receiving dock corridor, and public stairways unify the campus. Together, these elements reflect a vision of healthcare that is functional, resilient, and community-centered.
