Washington Elementary School

Salt Lake City School District

Salt Lake City, Utah

Washington Elementary School welcomes and engages students and families from diverse cultural backgrounds, while embracing the context of the surrounding historic neighborhood.   Academically, the building provides an architectural solution that encourages and supports the practices and behaviors important to the success of collaborative learning-based curriculum.  The key element is the arrangement of the classrooms into academic learning centers, each surrounding an exciting central activity space. This space provides a flexible and visible environment for student group collaboration and tutoring, including unique "learning nooks" adjacent to every classroom.  Within each learning center is the teacher prep/conference room/mini library, which provides a home-base for teacher collaboration and student project work.
