Health Sciences Education

University of Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah

This iconic facility is bordered by pedestrian pathways and offers splendid mountain and valley views.  As the teaching center for all of the Health Sciences, the building features a variety of learning, collaboration and support spaces. Also included are a medical bookstore and a cafe.

The essence of the design is a five-story block to the east, central glass corridor running the length of the building, and lower three- and two-story elements on the west.  A full-height glass atrium visually and symbolically connects the different disciplines occupying various locations. The central corridor expands into various social spaces at different places along its length. The main entrance is accessed by a pedestrian pathway, and the design contains a charming public forecourt with space for outdoor dining and gathering.  The cafe is prominently located near the main entry, accessible from the outdoor plaza.

The exterior materials are brick, glass curtainwall and metal panel.  The red brick visually connects to the adjacent buildings.  Glass curtainwall defines the exterior of the main corridor and the atrium, marking these elements as special spaces and maximizing their openness to the exterior.  On the west façade, sunscreens reduce glare and heat gain on the interior and animate the exterior with ever changing shadows throughout the day.
