As a principal architect at VCBO Architecture, Derek Payne has led the architectural design and planning efforts of many significant higher education, sports, and urban renewal projects in the State of Utah. Derek has led the design and construction efforts for such varied projects as the Meldrum Science Center at Westminster College, Holland Centennial Commons at Dixie State University, Wilmington Gardens Mixed Use in Sugar House, and the Football Centers at BYU and University of Utah. Through close collaboration with project stakeholders, Derek has planned, programmed and designed many of Utah's most innovative and successful structures.  These projects reflect the values, hopes and aspirations of their users.  Derek’s projects have been nationally recognized for design excellence, and he believes strongly that applying basic place-making design strategies to buildings as well as urban spaces is critical for making VCBO’s projects unique, active and successful people places.
